What does Demo do?
The work of Demo Finland is based on the Government’s white paper from 2004, according to which ”Respect for human rights, equality in society and between the sexes as well as the advancement of democracy are the prerequisites for development”. ”Facilitating encouraging conditions for the functioning of a multiparty system and parliament creates a favourable ground for the development and establishment of democracy. The Government is looking into ways of increasingly making use of the experience and participation of Finnish parliamentarians and political parties.”
When working with its partner organisations, Demo Finland particularly emphasises:
Central to Demo's work are joint and bilateral dialogue and training projects with political movements in developing countries. Through the dialogue and training projects the Finnish party activists gain a better understanding of the state of democracy in the developing countries. Parties contribute their own expertise and experience of good practices, thus supporting the multi-party system of the partner countries.
The purpose of Demo's collaborative projects is to promote dialogue and mutual learning on different forms of democracy, and the problems and possibilities thereof.
For the moment, Demo has a programme concentrating on political empowerment of women in Tanzania and a youth programme in Nepal. More information on these programmes can be found befind the links on the left.
