Democracy and sustainable development

One of the starting points for Demo’s work is that functioning democratic systems promote sustainable development. In a democratic society, citizens shall be able to influence the decisions affecting their lives and country, elect the decision-makers and hold them to account. If development occurs in the country, with help of democracy it can be channelled to benefit all the citizens. Thus functioning democracy - including also the independent judiciary and freedom of speech - may contribute to more sustainable development.

Democracy Digest is a website providing news, analysis and information on democracy promotion and related matters. One of the biggest TV documentary film events was organised during October 2007 when a series of documentary films was shown in over 120 countries. In all these films, the essence of democracy was discussed. The series was part of a broader project called Why Democracy which aims at enhancing democracy with various means.
