Our work in Finland

Demo Finland builds the capacity and commitment of Finnish political parties to democracy support and enhances multi-party dialogue. Demo Finland supports, in particular, the inclusivity of Finnish political parties by providing targeted training and offering opportunities for peer exchange with the participants in Demo Finland’s international programmes. Democracy Academy for political youth and student organisations is organised annually to increase the understanding of young politicians on democracy and to create a safe space for dialogue. Activities in Finland support Demo Finland’s international programmes. To increase the awareness and deepen the understanding of democracy issues in Finland, Demo Finland also organises public events and discussions on different aspects of democracy.

Demo Finland is Finland’s leading expert organisation of international democracy support.

Advancing climate justice through dialogue

During 2026, Demo Finland implements the project “Advancing climate justice through dialogue” in Finland with funding from the EU’s Connect for Global Change programme. The overall goal of the project is to engage politically active young people in promoting climate justice locally as well as globally.

Climate change and climate policy do not affect everyone in the same way. For climate policy to be just, it must be democratic and inclusive, and political parties must be able to work together to find common solutions. The aim of the project is to increase politically active young people’s understanding of the impacts of climate change and climate policy on different groups, both in Finland and globally, and to strengthen their ability to engage in constructive multi-party dialogue on the subject.

The project includes, for example, training and facilitated dialogue in Finland as well as online between Finnish and Kenyan young people. The project is implemented in collaboration with the youth and student organisations of all Finnish parliamentary parties.

The project is a follow-up to the policy brief Making climate policy more just through democratic means, published by Demo Finland in the summer of 2025.

Information for the project was gathered during the “Just Climate Policy for Whom?” training session organised by Demo Finland in December 2025, where young politicians learned about the COP30 climate conference and climate decision-making.

Results of our work

  • Participants of the Democracy Academy for youth politicians have gained knowledge and skills that they can utilise in their political careers.
  • The Democracy Academy has created new safe spaces for co-operation and interaction between youth representing different political parties.
  • Women politicians who participated in training programmes have enhanced skills and readiness to take part in political debate over foreign and security policy issues.
  • Demo Finland’s campaign for the improvement of voting rights of conscripts in Finnish Defence Forces, together with all youth wings of Finnish parliamentary parties and Varusmiesliitto (The Finnish Conscripts’ Union), was successful as the 2022 amendment in the electoral legislation enabled garrison voting in all elections.
