European commission is launching a new program to promote political and democratic reform in Northern Africa. The program, in its first phase, will take place in Morocco and Tunisia and aims at supporting independence and efficiency of the judiciary.
The new program is part of the strategic partnership between the EU and the Council of Europe. In addition to giving support to the judiciary, the program promotes good governance, human rights and democracy. Also, it seeks to prevent corruption and human trafficking.
Commision's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, told that " Building deep democracy is about more than simply holding one election. Countries need to build the democratic institutions which will allow democracy to take root and become a normal way of life."
