Democracy and sustainable development
One of the starting points for Demo’s work is that functioning democratic systems promote sustainable development. In a democratic society, citizens shall be able to influence the decisions affecting their lives and country, elect the decision-makers and hold them to account. If development occurs in the country, with help of democracy it can be channelled to benefit all the citizens. Thus functioning democracy - including also the independent judiciary and freedom of speech - may contribute to more sustainable development.
